before & after: living room and bedroom makeover

(if you don’t see the image sliders here, give it a moment to load πŸ™‚ )

Living room. I feel like the images speak for themselves here – less is more, white makes spaces bigger and brighter, burgundy… doesn’t really.
The handrail by the stairs at the back needs to go next, and the awful ceiling spot lights. Anyone got any good recommendations for a place to find great lighting?

So our bedroom warrants a little explanation, I think. It’s a big, vast open-plan space, with the bathroom I shared last time being the only enclosed area. So right now, it’s our bedroom and Orla’s combined, because she’s 4, and wants to spend most of the night in our bed anyway.
At some point the plan is a wall or two, some skylights, maybe a window knocked through… it’s all a little hazy, and I think I need an architect to help me really figure it out.
(There is another bedroom, but it’s two storeys down – I’ll share that floor in the next one of these posts.)

So this whole space is very unfinished – I’m itching to paint the floorboards white to brighten it up, add more skylights, and switch out the light fittings. So many plans, so little time…

I’m super interested to hear your thoughts. What would you have done with the space? Any brainwaves about what we should do upstairs?

  • Oh wow! I don’t have any advice I’m afraid but what a transformation, you’ve taken it from something I don’t think I could look at for too long on Rightmove, to a gorgeous, bright and calm space! I also can’t get over the helicopter dangling in the bedroom… xx

  • I love these posts, Sara! Probably because I live in a small, rented living space and need live my interior design dreams vicariously through other people! πŸ˜‰ But in all honesty, your home is simply beautiful – it’s cozy and inviting, but also really stylish and – dare I say it – instagrammable. If you ever decide that you want to give up Instagram, you could definitely look into a career in interior design – you have such a great eye! πŸ™‚

  • Your home looks lovely Sara. I particularly love the difference in the lounge, white really does open it up so much. I also noticed you have a swing in the lounge which is amazing. I would have loved that so much as a kid…actually, I’d still enjoy it a lot now.

Honestly I wouldn’t have known where to start from in the old house. I would have felt overwhelmed with the awful mix of things and colours and the lack of a defined style or storyline in the spaces. Not to mention that strong colours make me feel anxious, I mean, it is ok to have strong colours to contrast with whites and blacks but that was too much to cope with. It isn’t a small house, and the seller would have told me so, but all that mess would have made me think that it was much smaller actually. Because, I mean, was there space for air and oxygen and… life in general?

The makeover made wonders. Instead of anxious I would have felt calm and relaxed in your home. And that’s what you are supposed to feel when you’re at home, isn’t it? Not to speak that you work from home often, you need clear spaces to work in, so your brain isn’t distracted all the time or, like in my case, you don’t get headaches (I mean, really, what where the previous owners thinking?)

btw I love these wooden floors

  • This is incredible! Your current design and house vibes are beautiful and definitely to my taste (will be bookmarking these posts for inspo later) but what’s really incredible is how you saw a vision and were able to turn the space into something completely different. I also love the stairs and think more skylights upstairs would be amazing. I do quite like the darker floors though. πŸ˜‰

That is gorgeous. You have a flair for design.

  • Wow, it looks so much lighter and more spacious. Just gorgeous as it is πŸ™‚

  • In love with the white/wood combo….I am a total dunce with interior design so I got nothing tbh. Unhelpful! L x

  • holy moses. What a huge tranformation. Love it. I dont know what I would have done, it looks great as it is!
