“If you want to grow more and you want to get more, what are you willing to do? What are you willing to invest in it? Not only in terms of money but in terms of time, in terms of effort, in terms of sacrifices, in terms doing things that you don’t want to do?“
My guest today is Sarah Akwisombe: a photographer, a stylist, an interior designer, and a business coach, who believes so passionately in putting more money into more women’s hands that she has literally written the book on it. She set herself a personal goal of making a million pounds in a year in her business and, when we spoke, she was about a 100k away from that target. We talked about how she did it, the science behind ‘the law of attraction’, and why she thinks it is so important for women to have a seat at the business table.
Things We Talk About In This Episode:
- The value of having a coach or mentor: someone who has done what you want to do and can demonstrate that it’s possible
- The idea that we have self-imposed ‘ceilings’ in terms of what we believe we can achieve or strive for, and don’t reach beyond them until someone from the outside cracks them open
- How absolutely essential it is to invest in yourself (financially and in terms of time and effort) and your business if you want to succeed
- Business is evolving and changing so quickly nowadays that conventional ‘one size fits all’ business advice is no longer relevant: we need to learn from people and courses that can move with the times
- How Sarah nailed the mindset of not feeling grubby about earning money, owning her choices, and not accepting the imposition of guilt from other people
- Valuing the work you are already doing, and looking for space to create premium products
- Embracing your personal brand as your unique selling proposition (USP) and, in doing so, valuing yourself more highly and showing up with greater purpose
- The lightbulb moment in which Sarah realised “I’m one in a billion – I should be a billionaire!” (and the implied lesson in that for all of us!)
- How the lessons we learn and the skills we gain on one social media platform can be applied to others, even many years later, and we carry the legacy of all that learning forward over time
- Sarah’s bestselling book The Money is Coming, which she wrote about challenging our inherent and inherited beliefs about money and our ability to earn money
- How Sarah believes the ideas of “manifesting” and “the laws of attraction” have picked up a bad reputation, but are actually based in science
- Balancing parenthood with building and running a business, and helping our children understand the “why” behind what they see us do, so that they feel they are part of the process
